Volunteers are the key to reducing litter in the city of Norfolk, conserving our natural resources and enhancing community pride. Keep Norfolk Beautiful works with thousands of volunteers each year to clean, beautify and preserve Norfolk's green and public spaces.

Opportunities include litter cleanup, shoreline debris removal, environmental education, office assistance, special events coordination, and wetland preservation, to name a few. Volunteers can offer their energy one time, or on a regular basis.

Below is a list of current opportunities. To volunteer with KNB, complete a brief Volunteer Application, and our Volunteer Coordinator will contact you as opportunities are presented.

 

Current Opportunities

Oyster Shell Bagging - Saturday, February 18, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Hoffler Creek Wildlife Preserve. Come anytime during those hours to bag oyster shells as part of their bank restoration project! Contact hofflercreek@hofflercreek.org  or call 686-8684 to volunteer.

Paradise Creek Nature Park Cleanup - Saturday, February 18, 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., 1141 Victory Boulevard, Portsmouth. Phase I of this park opens in December, and it needs an initial cleanup of litter and debris to get things rolling! Email Erin Jackson or call 399-7487 for more details.

EcoGarden Work Day - Saturday, February 25, 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Prepare the EcoGarden for spring! Led by NEC Commissioner and Master Gardener Deb Mosher, volunteers will cleanout beds, spread mulch and get the garden ready to welcome spring. To volunteer contact volunteer@norfolkbeautiful.org. Rain date is March 3.

Supply Organization Day - Friday, march 2, 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. With approximately 100 groups doing amazing volunteer work this spring, we need to have their supplies ready! Volunteers will help organize gloves, trash bags and information packets. Contact volunteer@norfolkbeautiful.org to help out.

Norfolk Historic Cemeteries Volunteers Needed - Volunteer Meeting on Saturday, March 3, 11:00 a.m., Lambert's Point Community Center (1251 W. 42nd Street, Norfolk). Volunteers are needed for: datat entry, flower bed planting and maintenance, Adopt-A-Cemetery, memorial and statuary cleaning, restoration cataloguing, historic research. Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia needs volunteers for a variety of events in March. Contact the Foodbank Volunteer Manager, Jan Cline (314-4559, jcline@foodbankonline.org) for details.

  • Food Drive at the Tidewater Builders Association Mid-Atlantic Garden Show, Friday, March 9 to Sunday, March 11. This is an all-ages, family-friendly opportunity.
  • Food Drive at the Spring Craft Show, Friday, March 16 to Sunday, March 18. This is an all-ages, family-friendly opportunity.
  • Taste of Hampton Roads, Tuesday, March 6. Volunteers must be 18 or older and are required to attend a brief training the week prior to the event.

Recycling Ambassadors Wanted! - We need your help to make local events greener through our Special Events Recycling Program (SERP)! Ambassadors provide recycling education and encouragement to event visitors. Enjoy the sights and sounds of our local festivals AND keep Norfolk beautiful in the process! Questions? Animal Care Center- The Animal Care Center is seeking volunteers who want to help our resident animals.Volunteers can help with animal care, adoption assistance and counseling, special event coordination, or animal photos and bios among many other areas.  Interested individuals should contact Laurelyn Flowers.

City of Norfolk - Norfolk can use your help in libraries, at the Zoo, in recreation and more! Volunteers make our city great - for yourself, for your neighbors, for your community! Volunteer with the City of Norfolk today!

Nauticus-  Nauticus is excited to invite you to join its crew!  Volunteers can help teach history onboard the Battleship Wisconsin, show visitors local sea life in the touch tank, be of assistance in the souvenior shop, and lend a hand staffing the office.  Contact the Volunteer Coordinator or call 664-1043.

Children's Museum of Virginia- Looking for high school, college students or people with an interest in art to help in the make-n-take art room at  the NEW Children's Museum of VA in Olde Towne Portsmouth. Interested individuals must commit at least 3 hours per month. Mon-Sat: 10-1 and 1-4. Sun- 1-4. Contact Amanda Outcalt at 393-5258, ext. 17.

Norfolk Public Library (NPL) - Norfolk Public Libray has many opportunities for you to get involved in the community.  Volunteers can serve on the bookmobile, in the main library, or at any of the eleven other branches.  Volunteers help NPL strengthen customer service and programs while assisting the library to enhance its relationship with the community. Visit Norfolk Public Library Volunteers today! Parks & Recreation-  Are you interested in making a difference in your community? Do you have great skills that you would like to offer to those who need assistance?
